   Investigating a Twirling Toy—
Build a Model Catapult—
Paper Airplanes—

Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
This twirling toy is easy to make, and students of all levels will have fun investigat- ing variables that affect its motion. Students are presented with three different spinning toy models. Students gather data and make observations and then test a variable with each model and continue to record data and make observations. A design chal- lenge is presented with specific criteria and constraints. Students optimize the design solution and create their own spinning toy.
AP8053 | $18.50
Students build a catapult using simple mate- rials then test their machines to determine how variables, such as lever arm length
and projectile mass, affect launch distance. Using their data and observations, students brainstorm how to make improvements to the design in order to accurately launch a projectile at a target. Student engagement is ensured as they apply their knowledge
of levers, potential and kinetic energy and projectile motion in this fun competition!

After learning the basics of paper airplane design, students design a new toy paper airplane for FlinnToy. While staying within
a budget, teams decide materials to use
and best overall design to achieve the best long-distance, load-carrying flyer. As weights are added and materials change, students make design alterations for a long and stable flight. Student enthusiasm soars high as flight principles are investigated in this fun activity.

      Egg Elimination—
Explore the world of physics, projectile motion and gravity with this adrenaline-filled experience! Students are challenged to recreate the pinpoint accuracy required to air drop a package during times of war or natural disaster when land is inaccessible. Students engage in science and engineering practices as they improve their designs.

With the Egg Elimination—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM, utilize concepts of engineering, physics and poultry. Create a vehicle that will protect its precious cargo (an egg) and destroy the competition.
Drop Zone—
Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Students design and construct a parachute that will protect an egg from cracking open. Avoid the mess by using water-filled plastic eggs enclosed in a bag—or up the ante by using real eggs! By measuring weight, drop height and time of free fall, students explore the relationships between canopy surface area, drag and the resulting acceleration of the egg.
